Rick Chiricosta retires as head of Medical Mutual

Rick Chiricosta, president and CEO of Medical Mutual of Ohio, will retire at the end of 2022 after leading the company for more than a decade.

“This company and the amazing people who work here are so important to the communities of Ohio. I am forever grateful for the time I have spent here and the impact it has had on my life,” said Chiricosta in a press release.

Chiricosta was named president and CEO of Medical Mutual in January 2009, shortly after his predecessor Kent Clapp died in a plane crash.

Senior director of the medical mutual’s board of directors, Bob King, applauded Chiricosta’s “visionary leadership and unwavering dedication to the communities we serve,” in a provided statement.

“He has been the heart and soul of our company, fiercely dedicated to its customers and employees, for over a decade. I couldn’t be happier with the positive momentum he and his team have created in a very difficult environment.” said the king. “One of the greatest legacies Rick will leave behind is an extraordinarily engaged employee culture, focused on service and excellence.”

The board will launch a search for Chiricosta’s successor, with the help of executive search firm Spencer Stuart, in an effort to ensure a “smooth leadership transition”, the statement said.

Chiricosta began his career at Medical Mutual in 1986 as controller of the company’s western division in Toledo and served in various capacities before being named president and chief executive officer in 2009. In 2013, he was appointed chairman of the board of directors of Medical Mutual.

According to the release, his accomplishments during his tenure include the following:

• Helped make Medical Life one of the most successful group life and disability insurers in the country before it was sold by Medical Mutual in 1997. Ten years later, Chiricosta led the company’s return to the healthcare industry. life insurance.

• At a time when the company’s future was in jeopardy, completed several major financial transactions, collectively raising over $100 million in cash and equity.

• Led Medical Mutual through the passage and implementation of the Affordable Care Act.

• Expanded access to health care through the expansion of Medical Mutual’s Northeast Ohio provider network and establishment of a comprehensive national network.

• Oversaw key acquisitions including Superior Dental Care, HealthSpan, Bravo Wellness and ESI Employee Assistance Group.

Chiricosta has also been active in the community. He served as Secretary of the Board of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He has also chaired the boards of the Greater Cleveland Partnership and the Cuyahoga Community College Foundation, served as vice-chairman of the board of the Kidney Foundation of Ohio, and served on the executive committee of the United Way of Greater Cleveland. Chiricosta served as co-chair of the Greater Cleveland Food Bank’s 2019 and 2020 Harvest for Hunger campaigns.
