Montgomery Co. Schools Announce Appointment to Newly Created Physician Position

The Montgomery County School Board in Maryland has approved the appointment of Dr. Patricia Kapunan as the new school system physician.

The Montgomery County School Board in Maryland has approved the appointment of Dr. Patricia Kapunan as the new school system physician.

Kapunan is currently the Medical Director of the Adolescent Health Center in the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at National Children’s Hospital.

The position was created to help schools deal with the coronavirus and other public health issues, as well as manage the mental health needs of children across the school system.

According to the Montgomery County Public Schools job posting, the physician will be expected to work closely with the county’s Department of Health and Human Services.

School superintendent Monifa McKnight announced the appointment at the school board meeting on Thursday.

The appointment comes the day after Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich told reporters during his weekly briefing that the county had selected a candidate to serve as Montgomery County Health Officer, a vacant position since Dr. Travis Gayles left the post in September.

Elrich said the county’s preferred candidate is being interviewed by the Maryland Department of Health, a necessary step before the county can move forward with a formal nomination.
