Covid symptoms: new confusing signals to ‘seek medical attention’

The latest government data shows 157,758 new Covid cases for yesterday. As the number increases daily and the infection spreads rapidly, it can be helpful to be able to spot the lesser-known symptoms of COVID-19 infection. It is notably a sign that could signal the need for “medical attention”, according to a health agency.

Prior to the emergence of the new Omicron variant, the most well-known symptoms of Covid were high fever, cough, and loss or change in taste and smell.

However, some health organizations and researchers have reported other symptoms related to the coronavirus.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one sign of Covid you may not have heard of before is new confusion.

The health agency explains that this is one of the “emergency warning signs” of Covid.

If you encounter any new confusion, the CDC suggests that you “seek medical attention immediately.”

Another source that has flagged confusion as a possible coronavirus symptom is the ZOE COVID Symptom Study app.

The app was launched by health science company ZOE in collaboration with King’s College London Scientific Analytics.

Their research is “the largest ongoing study in the world” on Covid with more than four million users.

‘Millions’ of app users have reported new confusion or mental disturbance as one of the symptoms of Covid.

This sign, also known as delirium, comes in two types, both indicating a change in your normal behavior.

The ZOE COVID study explains that you can experience hyperactive or hypoactive delirium.

How to spot a new confusion?

Hyperactive delirium describes sudden changes in character and strange behavior. This may include restlessness, distress, or aggression.

Hypoactive delirium can make a person withdrawn and less responsive, even drowsy. This type can be harder to spot.

The app explains that this symptom mainly occurs in older people with coronavirus.

About 20% of adults over the age of 65 have reported this symptom, while 15% of those between the ages of 16 and 65 have experienced delirium.

Although delirium can be a warning sign of Covid, it could also signal a variety of different health conditions, so you should see a doctor, the NHS adds.

What are the symptoms of Omicron?

The new variant of Covid, which is believed to have originated in southern Africa, can also cause different symptoms from the original three.

Based on reports from South Africa, new symptoms linked to Omicron include:

  • Sore throat
  • Mild muscle pain
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Dry cough
  • Night sweats.

If you think you have symptoms of coronavirus, you should self-isolate and take a PCR test.
