Last name: carrie nelson
old title: Senior Vice President and CMO of Population Health and Health Outcomes, Attorney Aurora Health
New title: Chief Medical Officer, Amwell
Amwell tapped Nelson as its new CMO, filling a role that had been vacant since last summer, the ttelehealth supplier announced on Wednesday.
The company’s former chief marketing officer, Peter Antall, left Amwell in August to become chief marketing officer of virtual behavioral healthcare startup Brightline.
Since then, a group of medical directors have led Amwell’s clinical team, the company told Healthcare Dive.
As CMO, Nelson will focus on helping Amwell’s payer and provider customers get the most out of the provider’s Converge infrastructure platform, launched last spring, and help them take advantage of programs hybrid care to improve the health of the population.
Nelson will also have clinical supervision of physicians from Amwell’s clinical arm, Amwell Medical Group.
“Carrie’s clinical perspective will be critical to the continued sales and implementation of our infrastructure software,” Amwell Chief Operating Officer Kurt Knight said in a statement on Nelson’s appointment. .
Amwell has been laser-focused on expanding Converge’s capabilities and migrating existing customers to the new platform. However, rising R&D costs and resulting customer churn have strained the Boston-based virtual care provider’s finances.
Nelson joins Amwell from Advocate Aurora, an Illinois-based regional health system, where, in addition to serving as SVP and CMO, the executive also served as clinical director for Advocate Physician Partners, an internal group focused on value-based care in partnership with employees. and independent medical practices. She also worked as a family physician for nearly three decades.
Amwell isn’t the only telehealth provider to see recent turnover in key clinical positions. In April, Teladoc also announced a new CMO, who came to virtual care giant Amazon Web Services.
